Summer in the City What is the Summer in the City Program?

Each year the City of Knoxville offers a Summer in the City Intern Program. The paid six week summer internship is for applicants who are between 17 and 22 years of age. Applicants must be 17 years of age by the beginning of the six weeks and applicants must not be 23 years of age before the end of the six weeks. The applicants are paid a salary of $8.75 per hour for the Summer of 2019.

For 2019, the program runs from June 17 to July 26. Interns are placed within a city department with a supervisor/mentor from that department that will oversee his/her work and meet with the intern on a weekly basis to provide instructional feedback. The interns will be assigned various administrative and support tasks while also participating in weekly workplace and developmental trainings on topics such as financial planning, customer service, motivation & team work, and office techniques. The weekly commitment for interns will be 30 hours per week and also includes participating in a community service project as a group.

2019 Group Project

#FEEDKNOXThe City of Knoxville’s Summer in the City interns have made the focus of their group project one of the essentials of life: food. Through their #FeedKnox #OneLoveDay campaign, the interns will use social media to encourage Knoxville residents to donate their time, money and canned goods to local charities that work to remediate hunger in our community. All Knoxville residents are invited to participate in the campaign. Here’s how:
• Choose how to give. You can either donate money or volunteer time to a local food kitchen, food pantry or other hunger-related charity.
• Take a photo of yourself volunteering or donating.
• Tag the photo with #FeedKnox and #OneLoveDay.
• Post the photo online and encourage your friends to share.
