KUB to Purge Air from a Natural Gas Pipeline Sept. 6

Posted: 09/02/2016
On Tuesday, September 6, between the hours of 11 a.m. – 4 p.m., KUB will perform a process called “purging” to remove air and replace it with natural gas in the newly-installed natural gas pipeline at in the area of Lakeshore Park, S. Northshore Drive, Westland Drive, and Lyons View Pike. This work is weather dependent.

As part of the purging process, a “rotten egg” odor may be present in the immediate area as natural gas is safely released from the pipeline as part of this work. Natural gas is colorless and odorless; however, for safety purposes KUB adds the chemical mercaptan to its natural gas supply to make even small released amounts easily detectable. While the odor may be temporarily unpleasant, mercaptan poses no hazards, and any associated odors should dissipate quickly once the natural gas is released from the pipeline. There may also be temporary elevated noise levels in the immediate area.

KUB has coordinated with local fire and police agencies to make them aware of this work and KUB personnel will be onsite at all times throughout the process to monitor all activities.

No customer natural gas service interruptions will be required in association with this work.
