As fall brings football and festival season to Knoxville, the City’s communication team will be posting weekly blogs to help keep you apprised of events and parking situations downtown. A series of closures will affect the State Street Garage as a construction project revs up to add two new decks and 570 more parking spaces to the popular parking destination for downtown visitors.
Those closures are set to begin in early October. In the meantime, it’s a good time to consider the alternatives.
This weekend:
Friday: All-star bluegrass band The Earls of Leicester perform tonight at the historic Bijou Theatre. Free parking is available at the Dwight Kessel garage located just down the hill, on the corner of E. Hill and State Street.
At the Tennessee Theatre, The Black Jacket Symphony presents AD/DC’s "Back in Black," at 8 p.m.
Movies on Market Square starts tonight with a screening of Space Jam (1996, PG) beginning at 8 p.m. (Wall Avenue will be closed from 8-10 p.m. so as not to cast shadows on the screen, so plan accordingly). Free parking is available when entering after 6 p.m. at City-owned garages as well as the Langley Garage (407 Walnut St), which is a great go-to for after-hours parking, especially once construction begins at State Street Garage.
Horror movie season has begun with the openings of The Nun, Predator and A Simple Favor at Regal Riviera.
Saturday: UT’s home football game against the UTEP Miners is at noon, so ticketholders should strategize early.
Knoxville Area Transit’s Passenger Playbooks are guides to using KAT's fixed routes to reach Cumberland Avenue, just two blocks from Neyland Stadium. If you live near one of the city's main thoroughfares (like Kingston Pike, Broadway, Magnolia Avenue, Clinton Highway or Chapman Highway), there's a Passenger Playbook showing step-by-step processes for hopping on a KAT bus and riding to and from the game. Passes are only $4.
Gameday shuttles cost more ($10-$20 round trip) but are worth checking out.
Peaches are out, but apples are in. Market Square Farmers’ Market is 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. on Market Square.
