State Street Garage Expansion in Final Stage of Construction
The State Street Garage expansion is nearing completion.

The big crane has finished its work and the large pre-fabricated pieces are all in place. The construction of two new decks in the State Street Garage has moved into its final stage. The early June completion target remains, within budget, just a mere two months away.

As the work progresses, a few hundred more parking spaces have become available, bringing the garage’s current capacity back to about 850 vehicles.

That’s just a taste of what’s to come. In June, once all staging areas are freed up and the 570 new spaces are opened up on the two new decks, the garage will be able to park about 1,600 vehicles.

“It’s apparent, as Knoxville gets into the spring festival season, just how crucial it is to have convenient and free weekend and night-time parking in the heart of downtown,” says Rick Emmett, the City’s Downtown Coordinator. “The expanded State Street Garage will serve downtown well as it continues to grow and prosper. This is an $11 million investment that will benefit residents, employees, shoppers, diners and business patrons for many years to come.”

A one-way northbound lane of State Street has been reopened, and the garage exit onto State Street has also reopened. (The garage entrance from State Street remains closed as it’s being rebuilt.) The Union Avenue exit has returned to being an automated exit.

Meanwhile, the stairs on the west side of the garage are open up to the garage’s third level. But the elevator remains closed due to the new decks being installed.

Look for another update in early May, as the construction project heads into its final stretch.
