Fatal Crash on I-40 Near Strawberry Plains Pike

At around 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 16, 2021, KPD officers responded to a crash with injuries in both the eastbound and westbound lanes of I-40 near Strawberry Plains Pike. Based on the preliminary investigation, it is believed that vehicle one was traveling westbound when it crossed the center median and struck vehicle two, which was traveling in the eastbound lanes. Vehicle one was then struck by a tractor trailer that was also traveling eastbound. Both vehicle one and the tractor trailer subsequently caught on fire following that collision.

The driver of vehicle one was pronounced deceased at the scene. The two occupants of vehicle two suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the crash and were transported to UTMC for treatment. The driver of the tractor trailer was uninjured.

Crash reconstruction personnel responded to the scene to begin the investigation into the crash, which remains ongoing at this time. All of the eastbound and westbound lanes of I-40 were closed as emergency responders worked to clear the scene. All lanes reopened at approximately 12:30 a.m.
