Hundreds of family members, friends and well-wishers gathered in the Main Assembly Room of the City County Building on Saturday morning, Dec. 16, as five new City Council members were sworn into office.
The new Council then met and selected its leadership:
- Vice Mayor Finbarr Saunders;
- Beer Board Chair George Wallace; and
- Knoxville Transportation Authority Board Member Gwen McKenzie.
The newest Council members were elected in the Nov. 7 General Election. To read a short bio of each of the new Council members, or to see photos from Saturday's swearing-in ceremony, click on their names below:
• Stephanie Welch (1st District);
• Andrew Roberto (2nd District);
• Seema Singh-Perez (3rd District);
• Lauren Rider (4th District); and
• Gwen McKenzie (6th District).
This new Council is the most diverse in the city's history. For the first time, four women are serving, including the first Indian-American and the first African-American woman.
Congratulations to the newly-selected Council leadership and to the five new members!
