2018 Knoxville EarthFest: Hear from Environmental Innovators; Enjoy Live Music, Food, Activities

At this weekend’s 19th annual Knoxville EarthFest, enjoy free activities and walk away with giveaways and helpful tips on how to lead a more sustainable life.

Held this Saturday, April 28, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., EarthFest will be held within the beautiful, majestic setting of the Knoxville Botanical Garden and Arboretum.

The festival’s theme this year is “Make Your Mark” in light of Knoxville’s recent designation as one of Etsy’s first “Maker Cities.” EarthFest will feature a speaker series of entrepreneurs who have a niche for environmental innovation.

Besides hearing from local visionaries, there’s also the chance to enjoy music, kids’ activities, food, crafts, and local beer.

A variety of live music will be on the entertainment stage throughout the entire festival, including sounds of light jazz, blues, and acoustic music.

Kids' Yoga

Kids will enjoy craft stations where they can make items out of recyclables, play a giant environmental matching game, participate in a recycling relay race, create pine cone bird feeders, delve into kids’ yoga, and so much more.

The activities aren’t limited to the kids. There’s also a native plant sale and an alternative fuel vehicle showcase, including the Tesla Model X, the University of Tennessee EcoCar (a Camaro rebuilt by UT students to run as an AFV), a City of Knoxville propane lawn mower, and a Nissan LEAF.

Knoxville EarthFest is unique in that it is a zero-waste event, meaning that all waste from the event is either recycled, reused, or composted.

The City of Knoxville Solid Waste Division is a long-running sponsor and organizing partner of Knoxville EarthFest. The City of Knoxville and Knox County will share a booth that attendees can visit to learn about City and County solid waste practices. Plus, there’s always the opportunity to sign up for a free recycling cart.

City of Knoxville services include free curbside recycling for households. Over the last year, the number of households in the City that participate in curbside recycling has jumped from 40 percent to 46 percent. There were 6,952 tons of waste recycled in the last year, diverting that waste from local landfills.
