Hot Temps Bring Hot, New Paving Projects
Hot temperatures are good for keeping asphalt warmed for paving. That makes the summer paving season, and crews certainly have been busy!
Cherry Street was recently resurfaced.
Each year, the City’s Engineering Department oversees the resurfacing of an average of 48 miles of the 1,000-mile street system within the city limits.
Some of the larger streets on the list this year’s $8.4 million contract already completed are primarily in the northeast part of town and include:
Central Avenue Pike (Dante Road to Dutch Valley Drive)
N. Cherry Street (North from railroad tracks to Magnolia Avenue)
Martin Luther King Jr Avenue (from Beaman Street to Kirkwood Street)
Washington Pike (from Greenway Drive to Centerline Drive, and Greenway Drive to Murphy Road)
Pleasant Ridge Road is slated for resurfacing from I-640/75 to Western Avenue by the first week of August 2018.
As the season progresses, crews will migrate to cover other portions of the city. Some of the larger resurfacing projects on the 2018 list include:
Central Street (North from railroad tracks to Jackson Avenue; from Jackson Avenue to W Summit Hill Drive)
Dandridge Avenue (from Wilder Place to Riverside Drive)
Fifth Avenue (from Broadway to Central Street)
Gleason Drive (from Montvue Road to Wellsley Park Road)
Moody Avenue (from Martin Mill Pike to Chapman Highway)
Morrell Road (from Kingston Pike to Northshore Drive)
Young High Pike (from Chapman Highway to Woodlawn Pike)
The 2018 Resurfacing Project contract entails nearly 200 street paving projects. To view the full list of streets on the list, click

Paving doesn’t only take place on the streets. The Engineering Department is one project shy of finishing up the $600,000 2018 Facilities Paving Project, which primarily entails recreation sites.
Already completed include:
Milton Roberts Recreation Center parking lot – 5900 Asheville Hwy.
Northwest Greenway – 5325 Pleasant Ridge Rd.
West Hills Park parking lot – 400 N Winston Rd.
West Hills Park parking lot – 7624 Sheffield Dr.
The only remaining project is the surface lot at the City’s Solid Waste Management Facility located at 1033 Elm St.
There's a science to the paving schedule for streets and surface lots, and much of it is associated with weather. To read an explanation of paving seasons in Knoxville, click
