The City’s Office of Neighborhoods and Knoxville Police Department assisted 31 local neighborhoods in hosting National Night Out events on October 2, as part of the 35th annual occasion of the national campaign that encourages neighbors to meet with and work together with law enforcement for community strength and safety.

Mayor Madeline Rogero visited several neighborhood gatherings and spoke with attendees about a variety of topics, including the importance of forming and engaging with neighborhood groups and associations. She said meeting with people on nights like this one is her favorite part of being Mayor—“the best job in the world.” 

At the Morningside Heights Community Center, neighbors gathered for a spread of hot dogs, chips and cookies, and before the dinner bell rang, Mayor Rogero answered questions on a range of issues including the future of Knoxville Center (nee East Towne) Mall, repair of nearby bike and walking trails, affordable housing, the Magnolia Avenue Streetscapes plan, and homelessness. “My job is to take action,” said Mayor Rogero. “You can’t get stuck because you have different opinions.”

Mayor Rogero also thanked the several KPD officers in attendance for their work with neighbors and the challenges they face. As a resident, “the easier thing to do is complain,” Mayor Rogero said. “But we know it’s better to work together.”
