City's Tree Board Celebrates Arbor Day at Lonsdale Elementary School
Christi Branscom, Deputy to the Mayor and the City's Chief Operating Officer, reads the Arbor Day proclamation Friday at Lonsdale Elementary School.
During Friday's Arbor Day celebration at Lonsdale Elementary School, Knoxville was recognized for the 24th consecutive year as a Tree City USA community by the Arbor Day Foundation.
The recognition honors the City's commitment to effective urban management. The City plants about 500 trees at parks and on public right-of-ways each year.
The Arbor Day event with the City of Knoxville Tree Board generally lauded everything about being green and leafy. The gathering also included student performances and saluted the young artists who crafted the best Arbor Day posters.
When and where did Arbor Day first get going? The Spanish village of Mondonedo is credited with holding the world’s first documented Arbor Day festival in 1594. Almost 280 years later, Nebraska City, Neb., planted 1 million trees on April 10, 1872, believed to be the first American Arbor Day celebration.
Arbor Day celebrations now are trending toward a fall schedule, since that coincides with the best time to plant trees and shrubs.
