Jackson Avenue Ramps Update: Crews Putting Original Pavers Back in Place as Project Nears Completion

As the new Jackson Avenue Ramps inch closer toward completion, crews this month have been completing a sentimental milestone in the $8.7 million project: The trademark 100-year-old red brick pavers are being put back in place.

Last year, when work began, the historic bricks were carefully removed, cleaned and put into safe keeping for the time being.

The project team headed by Bell and Associates Construction deconstructed and removed the structurally deficient ramps. New utility infrastructure was installed. Foundations of the historic Old City buildings that had been connected to the old ramps were reinforced. Concrete supports for the new ramps were poured, and decks were built.

And now, with substantial completion less than three weeks away, the familiar old bricks have come out of storage and are being put back on the top of the ramps. They will meet stamped concrete at the base of the ramps that will mimic the look of the older bricks.

The new ramps, connecting Jackson Avenue and Gay Street in the Old City, are scheduled to be completed by Dec. 8, 2020. By that time, detail work on the ramps may remain, but the ramps are expected to be open again to vehicles and pedestrians.
