Fund Continues to Support Historic Preservation

May is Historic Preservation Month and a timely opportunity to provide an update on two projects that have received funds from the City’s Historic Preservation Fund.

Mayor Kincannon’s 2021-22 Budget includes $300,000 toward Historic Preservation to assist property owners and developers in preserving historic structures. Additional information on the application process will be announced soon; in recent years, the department has begun taking applications for funding in September.

In January 2021, Axle Logistics moved into its newly restored headquarters at 835 N. Central. This historic building, known as the Hull-Dobbs Building after the Ford dealership that once occupied the space, has been renovated into a truly 21st century office space -- with an open floor plan, a gym and a putting green in the back.

The project received $200,000 from the City’s Historic Preservation Fund to complete the exterior work including new windows and doors.

Just a few miles away on North Broadway, Fairmont Flats at 3415 N. Broadway is getting the finishing touches on its 10 condominiums, which surround a shared courtyard. The project received $200,000 in the form of a repayable loan; as each condo sells, the developer will repay that portion of the loan to the Historic Preservation Fund.

Built in 1939, the Art Moderne-style Taggart Building originally housed both residential and commercial tenants, including the Arlington Branch of the Knox County Public Library.
