"Walking in a Winter Wonderland..."

Go ahead. Try to not sing to yourself "Walking in a Winter Wonderland" as you imagine happily trekking on a wide new sidewalk or greenway as fluffy snowflakes are falling all around you.

As the holidays approach, it's a good time to celebrate all the planning, designing and building of new pathways that increased walkability citywide in 2022.

Did you know that the City this year finished or is well into more than $7.2 million in major sidewalk and greenway projects? These investments aim to better connect neighborhoods and create new options for thousands of families to walk or bike to parks, schools, workplaces and other destinations.

A few of our favorite year-end and looking-ahead-to-2023 highlights:

Atlantic Avenue sidewalk

North Knoxville soon will have a safe new 3,000-foot east-west pedestrian route that connects Atlantic Avenue area families with the Broadway business corridor. The $2.9 million project is expected to be completed in early 2023.

Coker Avenue sidewalk

In May, Mayor Indya Kincannon joined Belle Morris Elementary School educators, students and parents in trying out the new 2,000-foot Coker Avenue sidewalk.

This $791,441 City investment constructed a “missing link” sidewalk in North Knoxville that students will use to walk safely to and from the school. (More details HERE.)

Northwest Greenway Connector

Did you know that within a 3-mile radius of Victor Ashe Park, there are 73 miles of greenways and sidewalks? The $1.7 million Northwest Greenway Connector greatly improved the connectivity within this network.

Texas Avenue sidewalk

A new $1 million Texas Avenue sidewalk will open in early 2023 - 1,300 linear feet of sidewalk, curb, a retaining wall and drainage infrastructure between Western Avenue and Gerald Drive.

The new sidewalk connects two existing sidewalks and provides a safe pedestrian walkway in the heart of Lonsdale.

Sullivan and Palmetto Road sidewalks

In late September, Mayor Kincannon and Pleasant Ridge Elementary students and educators enjoyed a stroll on the new $900,000 sidewalks that safely connect families and the school. Click HERE for details.
