Nimble City Crew Fixes 1,000 Potholes in 3 Months
The City's Public Service Department crew that fixes potholes gets a workout - especially this time of year.

In the first three months of 2025 alone, City pothole-patching professionals remediated more than 1,000 divots, gouges, pits and holes in City streets.

That's a lot of potholes. Check out this video!

"Our pothole crew really takes pride in what they do," Public Service Director Rachel Butzler said. "When residents call in a request for service, those potholes get filled within two working days.

"Most pothole repairs start with a call into 3-1-1. But if the crew is out driving to an assignment, and they just happen to see potholes, they'll routinely stop and patch them, before anyone requests it."

The City is responsible for maintaining City-owned streets - not the interstates or state routes, like Broadway or Chapman Highway.

And there's actually a "pothole season" - generally, from November through March. Its severity is tied to the weather: The wetter the winter, the more that water freezes, expands and contracts, which causes potholes to form.

"If you see a pothole, call 3-1-1 and report it - or use the My Knoxville app," Butzler said. "Within two business days, that pothole will be gone."
