Pedestrian System Grows as Work Progresses on New Sidewalks for West Young High Pike
Southern Constructors, Inc. workers prepare to install drainage pipes that will run under the new sidewalk segment on West Young High Pike.
Construction for the new sidewalk on West Young High Pike is progressing after a long period of rain and snow at the start of the year.
When completed, the new 1,600 feet of sidewalk will link to an existing sidewalk segment on West Young High Pike, creating full pedestrian passage between Chapman Highway and Martin Mill Pike, and creating more than a half mile of connected sidewalk by tapping into an existing sidewalk stretch on Martin Mill Pike.
The new sidewalk segment will give a highly populated residential area access to an existing Knoxville Area Transit bus stop, a Kroger store, and many other Chapman Highway stores and businesses.
The project is a second pedestrian project under construction in the area. In December, the City's new Greenways Service Crew began work on its first project, a 0.7-mile extension of Mary Vestal Greenway that will feed into Martin Mill Pike's existing section of sidewalk.
Once both projects are completed, the community will have a pedestrian system of greenway and sidewalks that include West Young High Pike, Martin Mill Pike, Mary Vestal Greenway, Maryville Pike, and West Blount Avenue. This means neighborhood pedestrians will be able to travel between Mary Vestal Park and the South Knoxville Community Center to businesses on Chapman Highway.
Southern Constructors, Inc. has been contracted to build the sidewalk and CDM Smith is serving as the project designer.
Construction is expected to be completed by spring 2017.
