World Refugee Week Begins with Saturday Celebration

Saturday, June 17 was an eventful day in Knoxville, what with both the Big Kahuna Wing Festival and Bark in the Park on World’s Fair Park, and Pridefest on the Civic Coliseum lawn.

Just north of downtown, another festive gathering celebrated the diversity of our City and its residents.

Bridge Refugee Services, Inc. hosted their annual World Refugee Day celebration on the grounds of their North Hills headquarters. The lawn bustled with activity: kids playing games, people dancing to the live music, and guests enjoying a lot of delicious food.

Patricia Robledo, Business Liaison City of Knoxville (above center), presented a proclamation from the Mayor’s office to Bridge Executive Director Drocella Mugorewera (right) and Jana Mason, Senior Advisor for External Relations and Government Affairs at the Washington, D.C. office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

Bridge Refugee Services Inc. helps refugees find homes and work, learn English, and become involved in the community. Bridge is the only refugee resettlement agency in East Tennessee

Lt. Savannah Ayub, who serves as the Knoxville Police Department's liaison for Bridge, also stopped by the event.
