Climate Council Holds Inaugural Meeting
Mayor Indya Kincannon presided over the first meeting of the
Climate Council
on Tuesday, May 12. Council members convened remotely and virtually, which is the new protocol due to COVID-19 pandemic precautions.
Mayor Kincannon opened the meeting by welcoming participants and acknowledging the context in which their inaugural meeting was occurring.
“I’m really glad to be working on this big-picture stuff in the midst of our day-to-day work of dealing with COVID issues,” she said.
“As all of you know, community emissions are much more difficult to move the needle on, and the magnitude of making such a significant change is going to take years to implement. And it will require steady and proactive leadership – not just on the part of the city but on the part of the stakeholders this committee represents. And it has to start now.”
Council members (listed in
this news release
) introduced themselves and spoke briefly about the perspectives on sustainability and climate action they’ll bring to the council and its goal to reduce community emissions 80 percent by 2050.
