This week is National Public Works Week. Look for at-a-glance summaries this week - here on City Blog, and also on the City's Facebook page - of the great work being done by the City's Engineering, Public Service, Plans Review and Inspections, Parks and Recreation, and Fleet Services departments.

And be sure to thank City public works employees when you see them out on a job!

Let's start off with the Fleet Services Department.

Did you know that Fleet Services is responsible for the acquisition, maintenance, repair, use and disposal of the City’s fleet of more than 1,500 vehicles and equipment? In 2019, Fleet completed 10,309 work orders and replaced 135 vehicles and pieces of equipment.

Did you know that Fleet Services operates an Apprentice Mechanic program to help local technical school students gain valuable experience? Some students, like Automotive Technician II Andrew Crowder (below), complete the program and move on to full-time careers with the City of Knoxville.

Or: Did you know that the City of Knoxville has a fleet of 23 zero-turn mowers that run on clean-burning propane? These mowers are maintained by dedicated professionals like Equipment Technician I Jason Freeman (pictured below) in the City’s small engine repair shop.
