Garth fans: Cumberland Avenue Open for Business - and Scavenger Hunts!

Cumberland Avenue merchants offer Garth Brooks scavenger hunt.

Cumberland Avenue is open for business - and for everything Garth Brooks. Fans of the country superstar are encouraged to combine this weekend's sizzling hot concert series at Thompson-Boling Arena with dinner and pre- or post-Garth entertainment along the Cumberland Avenue Corridor.

Merchants are offering special promotions tied to Garth's four performances. In fact, concert revelers can take part in a scavenger hunt in the Cumberland Avenue Corridor throughout the weekend.

Scavenger hunters will be given clues, and then they'll ferret out the corresponding businesses in the Cumberland Avenue Corridor. They'll know they've arrived at the right location, because the 16 participating merchants will share bigger-than-life-size cutouts of Garth Brooks' head, cowboy hat and all, made by the folks at Graphic Creations. (You know - Garth Heads!)

Fans then can take selfies at these businesses and enter into a Monday drawing for gift cards from merchants. Prizes include a free night's stay and breakfast at the Hilton Garden Inn, plus a ton of specials, coupons, discounts and giveaways from other stores and restaurants.

At midday Friday, Mayor Madeline Rogero and Cumberland Avenue Merchants Association (CAMA) members walked up and down Cumberland Avenue with the oversized Garth Brooks cutouts, taking photos at various Cumberland Avenue iconic eateries and night spots. The entourage was greeted by honking motorists - eager fans excited about the concert series.

The group included Debbie Billings of Graphic Creations; Brooke Wilson of Copper Cellar; Teri Branham of UT Federal Credit Union; Joe Smith of The Half Barrel; Zack Glovak of Goal Post Tavern; and others, who joined the group along its route.

Cumberland Avenue over the next two years will be undergoing a major reconstruction, and two lanes currently are closed along a section of the road. But local traffic is flowing well through the construction zone, and businesses and merchants remain accessible. Many cut-through commuters who are not shopping or dining in the Cumberland corridor are following the City's recommended detours.

The Cumberland Avenue Corridor Project is a City of Knoxville initiative to redesign Cumberland Avenue from Alcoa Highway east to 17th Street, changing the existing four-lane street to a three-lane cross section with a raised median and left-turn lanes at intersections. Sidewalks will be widened and landscaped, and utility lines relocated, to create a more attractive, pedestrian-friendly corridor. By limiting left turns and creating turn lanes, vehicular traffic flow will be much improved.
