Fatal wreck on I-40 East near Asheville Highway

At 8:39 a.m. on Tuesday, March 17, Knoxville Police Department officers responded to a crash on I-40 East near Asheville Highway, where a tractor trailer overturned. Based on the evidence at the scene and witness statements, the tractor trailer was traveling on I-40 East when it lost control, struck the median and flipped.

The male driver of the tractor trailer was pronounced deceased at the scene. There were no other occupants in the vehicle or any additional injuries reported.

The trailer also struck the overhanging interstate sign and knocked it down into another tractor trailer traveling on I-40 West. All lanes of I-40 on both sides were temporarily blocked until emergency responders completely cleared the scene and opened all lanes around approximately 1 p.m.

The identity of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
