KPD Investigating Fatal Sutherland Avenue Shooting

Victim Identified from Sutherland Avenue Shooting (March 29, 2022, 1:15 p.m.)

Jaqwan Gillette, 18 of Knoxville, Tennessee, has been identified as the gunshot victim who was located in the parking lot of the Sutherland Flats apartments on Monday night.

The investigation shows that a shooting took place involving several individuals in the parking lot of the Dollar General at 3275 Sutherland Avenue at around 8:13 p.m. Gillette was found unresponsive in the Sutherland Flats apartment complex just minutes later.

No suspects are in custody at this time and the shooting remains under active investigation by KPD Violent Crimes Unit investigators, who are pursuing strong leads.

At around 8:13 p.m. on Monday, March 28, 2022, Knoxville Police Department officers responded to a shots fired call at the Dollar General at 3275 Sutherland Avenue. Minutes later, responding officers were advised that a man had collapsed in the lower parking lot of the Sutherland Flats apartments at 3200 Atchley Ridge Way.

Officers arrived on scene and located an unresponsive man who had been shot at least one time. Officers and EMS attempted to render aid, but the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Violent Crimes Unit investigators, Crime Lab personnel and the Medical Examiner’s Office responded to the scene to begin the investigation, which is in the preliminary stages at this time.
