KPD Investigating Fatal Hit-and-Run Crash on Western Avenue

UPDATE (April 5, 2023, 9:30 a.m.): The motorcyclist who was killed in the hit-and-run crash on Western Avenue on March 29, 2023 has been identified as Donald Massengill, 54 of Knoxville. The other vehicle that was involved in the crash has since been located. The investigation is progressing and Knoxville Police Department crash reconstruction investigators have been in consultation with the Knox County District Attorney’s Office, who will make a determination regarding prosecution.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing at this time.

The Knoxville Police Department is investigating a fatal hit-and-run crash involving a motorcycle that occurred late Wednesday night on Western Avenue.

At just after 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 29, 2023, KPD officers responded to a crash on Western Avenue near University Avenue. Based on the investigation at the scene, it is believed that a motorcycle was driving west on Western Avenue when it was rear-ended by a vehicle that drove away from the scene prior to officer arrival. The vehicle was believed to be a silver or a light-colored sedan that left on Western Avenue traveling away from downtown.

The motorcyclist, an adult man, was transported to the UT Medical Center with critical, life-threatening injuries, and has since died as a result of his injuries.
