The Knoxville Police Department is investigating a fatal crash that happened early Wednesday morning on Alcoa Highway.
At around 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 12, 2023, KPD officers were dispatched to a multi-vehicle crash in the 1900 block of Alcoa Highway. Three vehicles in total were involved in the crash.
Based on the investigation conducted at the scene, it is believed that a black sedan was driving south on Alcoa Highway. A southbound Fedex semi-truck attempted to merge to switch lanes when it struck the sedan. The sedan subsequently spun across the median and into the northbound lanes of Alcoa Highway, where it was struck by an SUV.
The driver of the black sedan was pronounced dead at the UT Medical Center, while the driver of the SUV was transported to UTMC for treatment for severe, non-life-threatening injuries. No other injuries were reported in the crash.
The crash remains under active investigation by KPD crash reconstruction investigators. The identity of the deceased is being withheld at this time.
