More Week 8 Details: From Utility Tunnel Removal to Salvaging Bricks
This week, Environmental Abatement Inc. crews are performing above-ceiling demolition on the 7th floor of the former Professional Office Building and mass demolition on the 6th floor, while also removing an old utility tunnel.
Meanwhile, Messer Construction is prepping materials for exterior partitions in the East Wing and salvaging masonry brick for reuse as keepsakes for North Knoxville families sentimental about the former St. Mary's Hospital and its community impact.
The City is investing $40 million to convert the vacant hospital campus into a new headquarters for City Fire, Police, Pension System and City Court operations. The public investment will prevent the site from devolving into a blighted eyesore. The City is also spending $6.5 million to clear the northern end of the site to create opportunities for private redevelopment.
