Week 24: Check Out Aerial View of Reconstruction in Progress
August 2020 aerial view of work underway at the Public Safety Complex
This photo provides a good vantage point, looking north, of the current work underway at the former St. Mary's Hospital site. But it also helps the viewer get a sense of what the site will look like once the $40 million Public Safety Complex opens in early 2022.
The Central Wing and its patient tower (center of photo) are coming down. The North Campus Annunciation Wing, Marian Wing and West Wing - the reddish-brown brick buildings (left) - also will be demolished. So will the smokestack and the St. Joseph Building and McCauley Hall, the buildings at the far top of the photo.
That's by design: The City is spending an additional $6.5 million to clear most of the north end of the campus, creating a blank canvas for future private redevelopment.
The hospital's stalwart and stately marble-accented 1929 Building (center, above the patient tower demolition) is being preserved. The 1929 Building, the original hospital building, will serve as an anchor for the redevelopment of the north end of the site.
At the far upper right of this photo is the Magdalen Clarke Tower. Lincoln Memorial University is converting the iconic high-rise into classrooms.
That leaves the former Professional Office Building (far lower right in photo), Central Wing Annex (white building, at right) and Women's Pavilion. These are being repurposed into the combined Public Safety Complex that will house Police, Fire, City Court and Pension System operations.
Renascent's high reach excavator continues to demolish the Central Wing patient tower.
What's happening this week
Renascent crews are continuing demolition work in the Central Wing, and they're also continuing a surgical separation of the Central Wing from the Central Wing Annex.
Environmental Abatement Inc., meanwhile, is continuing demolition of the LL2 floor in the Central Annex, demolition in the lower floors of the Women's Pavilion, and removal of equipment from the top floor of the Professional Office Building.
NEO Corp. is continuing abatement in the third and fourth floors of the Marian Wing.
And Messer Construction is monitoring safety items and covering open utility holes.
