Week 48: Foundation Walls of Razed Annunciation Wing Now Being Demolished

Last year, the obsolete Annunciation Wing of the vacated St. Mary's Hospital in North Knoxville was leveled. Now, Renascent contractor crews have begun demolishing the tall foundation walls that once had supported the wing.

The work is one of the next tasks in transforming the once-empty hospital campus into the City's new Public Safety Complex, scheduled to open in a little more than a year from now.

The former hospital's Professional Office Building, Central Wing Annex and Women's Pavilion are being repurposed to house City Police, Fire, E-911, Pension System and City Court operations.

The historic 1929 Building is being preserved, and the Magdalen Clarke Tower is already housing Lincoln Memorial University nursing classes.

Other non-descript buildings have been demolished, opening up the campus and uncovering the beautiful marble-accented 1929 Building. Last week, G&P Masonry crews completed their repair of the 1929 Building's parapet.

Meanwhile, the two photos below show recent work being done by Al Blankenship Enterprises at the Central Wing Annex.

This first photo is of the gooey mud mat (flowable fill) for a retaining wall footing with reinforcing steel at the Central Wing Annex. Below-grade levels of the wing have been demolished, leaving an opening. Blankenship is beginning the formwork for the new foundation wall this week.

In other work on the site: Renascent is continuing to process demolition debris, and crews last week cleared off the underground storage tanks on the northern end of the campus, a prerequisite for their removal.
