Week 2: Demolition and Abatement Continue
This week and throughout March, contractor crews anticipate continuing to make noticeable headway in demolishing parts of the former St. Mary’s Hospital in North Knoxville. The vacant site is being prepared for construction of a new City of Knoxville Public Safety Complex.

By the end of this week,  work on the fourth- and fifth-floor abatement in the Professional Office Building should be complete, and demolition of the East Wing will continue. Sorting the debris for recycling will go on for several more weeks.

Messer Construction will be also cleaning the glass and aluminum and painting over graffiti on the wall of the Women’s Pavilion.

Meanwhile, look for temporary power poles to be going up. BESCO is working toward providing power to two buildings while removing electrical hazards ahead of the abatement crews.

This week follows up on progress made last week, when demolition of the East Wing began with the removal of a sky bridge, and electrical elements were dismantled. About 40% of the East Wing was taken down last week.
