Employees, Neighbors Bike to Work

Posted: 05/27/2024
May 17, 2024, was National Bike to Work Day. To celebrate, several multi-modal transportation experts and advocates met bike commuters with coffee and doughnuts on Market Square.

Bike to Work Day

Knoxville Regional Transportation Planning Organization AmeriCorps member Emily Roberts and Knoxville-Knox County Planning Strategic Planning and Communications Manager Ally Ketron, left, speak with Transportation Engineer Maddi McClary, who bikes to work regularly to downtown from her home in South Knoxville. She values the freedom and fun of biking to work instead of driving, saying that she can easily change her route based on traffic congestion, construction projects or stops she needs to make.

Martin Pleasant from the City's Plans and Review team grabbed a coffee before heading to his office in the City County Building. He wore his all-weather gear in anticipation of the forecast for rain later in the afternoon.

Transportation Engineer Michael Workowsky (left with Emily Roberts, Zoe Scott of Bike Walk Knoxville, and Ally Ketron) lives and bikes to work in Virginia, near Washington, DC. He was in town for his daughter's graduation at the University of Tennessee, and he took time to drop by and show his support for bicycle infrastructure. He also shared his experiences commuting and working on projects that include and incentivize multimodal transportation. Thanks, Michael!

This bike, locked up outside the main entrance to the City County Building, looks like it's been through a lot and is ready for more.

People who work in or visit the City County Building have multiple bike racks to use on L1 and Main.

The next Bike to Work Day is Friday, May 16, 2025. See you -- and your bike -- there!
