City Schedule for 2019 MLK Holiday

Posted: 01/14/2019
City of Knoxville offices will be closed Monday, Jan. 21, 2019 for the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday.

Waste Connections will collect residential garbage and recycling on its regular schedule. Downtown trash and recycling will also be collected as usual. Thanksgiving and Christmas are the only days of the year when residential curbside trash and recycling are not picked up as scheduled.

The City’s five recycling drop-off centers will be open Monday, Jan. 21, 2019 but Goodwill attendants will not be on site to collect household donations.

The City’s Solid Waste Management Facility, 1033 Elm St., will be closed Saturday, Jan. 19, through Monday, Jan. 21, 2019.

Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue between North Beaman and Harriet Tubman streets will be closed to traffic from 7:30 a.m. to noon on Monday for the 2019 MLK Memorial Parade.

Parade participants will line up beginning at 8:30 a.m. at the Midway entrance of Chilhowee Park, 301 N. Beaman St. Step-off is at 10 a.m. The parade proceeds southwest on MLK Jr. Avenue, turning right onto Harriet Tubman Street and concluding at Overcoming Believers Church, 211 Harriet Tubman St. The church hosts a MLK Tribute Service beginning at noon, with an awards ceremony, a performance by the Celebration Choir and guest speaker Reena Evers-Everette, daughter of Civil Rights activist Medgar Evers, who was murdered by a white supremacist and Klansman in Mississippi in 1963.

On Monday, Jan. 21, 2019 Knoxville Area Transit will operate its buses and trolleys on a Saturday schedule. The Knoxville Station Customer Service Counter will be open 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

KAT bus routes (including 30, 33 and 34) may require minor detours before and during the parade but will return to regular route once the parade is over. Detour details will be available online at www.katbus.com.
