Mayor Kincannon Talks about George Floyd's Death, Protests, Commitment to Peace & Justice

Posted: 05/31/2020
Below is the transcript from Mayor Indya Kincannon's video release on May 31, 2020. In the video, Mayor Kincannon talks about George Floyd’s death, protests in Knoxville and her commitment as Mayor to work for peace and justice.

“I am here today, saddened, frustrated and repulsed by the police brutality in Minneapolis that led to the death of George Floyd. I understand how this and so many other senseless acts can erode people’s trust in their leaders.

“These acts challenge all of us, not only to acknowledge that racism is still prevalent in our society, but to ask ourselves: What am I doing to work against it?

“I first want to thank those who came together in prayer and protest Friday night. I am proud to live in a city where I know we can face tough issues together and peacefully.

“I want all Knoxvillians to be assured: You have a Mayor who is listening, you have a Mayor who will stand up against racism, and a Mayor who will combat injustice together as one community.

“We can all do better. And that includes those who claim to fight in the name of social justice by destroying property, inciting violence and deepening the divide.

“Working together for peace and justice is the answer, not violence. In fact, violence is the very thing that we all should be fighting against.

“Thank you for your time, and I wish everyone healing and peace.”
