Temporary Use of Outdoor Space for Restaurant Dining

To support local restaurants during COVID-19 pandemic, and to help promote outdoor settings and physical distancing, the City of Knoxville is offering a permit for temporary expansion of restaurants to both public and private outdoor spaces.

Restaurants may apply for the Temporary Use Permit, issued by the Zoning Administrator, for expanded outdoor seating for patrons. Restaurant owners are encouraged to think creatively about the use of areas such as parking areas and unused private or public property. Outdoor seating must be compatible with the surrounding area, affected neighbors must agree to the expansion, and proper care must be taken to protect surrounding development, traffic patterns, safety issues and the environment.
