Street Closures This Weekend; Rhythm N' Blooms, Chalk Walk, 5K Race

Posted: 04/08/2016
This weekend’s Rhythm N Blooms music festival will boast dozens of musical acts on eight stages in and around Knoxville’s Old City.

The Dogwood Arts Festival’s popular Chalk Walk, with its roots in 16th century Italian artistry, will draw thousands of visitors to Market Square on Saturday.

And Saturday’s Color Me Rad 5K is a different sort of road race – one in which runners get colored head to toe in vivid pinks, yellows, greens, blues and violets.

To accommodate a festive weekend, motorists should anticipate some downtown street closures. These include:

Rhythm N Blooms – Friday, April 8, through Sunday, April 10
• Jackson Avenue will be closed between Morgan and Patton streets, starting at 8 a.m. Friday, April 8. The street will reopen at 11:59 p.m. Sunday, April 10.
• In addition, another section of Jackson Avenue between Central Street and a parking lot just west of Morgan Street will be closed each day from 4-11:30 p.m.
• During the music festival, there will be a temporary no-parking zone on Jackson Avenue between Central and Patton, starting at 6 a.m. Friday.

Dogwood Art Festival’s Chalk Walk – Saturday, April 9
• Market Street between Union and Clinch avenues will be closed from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday.
• Union Avenue between Walnut and Gay streets also will be closed from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday.
• There will be temporary no-parking zones on Union Avenue between Walnut and Gay and on Market Street between Union and Clinch, starting at 6 a.m. Saturday.

Color Me Rad 5K – Saturday, April 9
• Honor Our Troops Drive between Howard Baker Avenue and Historic Preservation Drive will be closed from 8:30-10 a.m. Saturday.
• Anticipate rolling street closures along the 5K route: Honor Our Troops to Howard Baker (runners in east lane); Hill Avenue (runners will run east in the west lanes); cross Summit Hill Drive onto Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue (complete closure of MLK between Summit Hill and Bertrand Street); left onto Bertrand; left onto McCalla Avenue; left onto Willow Avenue; left onto Central Street; left onto the ramp from Hall of Fame Drive to Neyland Drive; up the ramp, left on Hall of Fame; right on Howard Baker to the Civic Coliseum courtyard; finish on Howard Baker.

“Book of Mormon” at the Tennessee Theatre
• State Street will be closed between Church and Clinch avenues from 9 p.m. Sunday, April 10, until 3 a.m. Monday, April 11. A crew will be loading out the sets and scenery as the “Book of Mormon” production wraps up an eight-show engagement at the Tennessee Theatre on Sunday night.
