Zoo Knoxville has been awarded a $500,000 grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS).  The funds will be used to create state-of-the-art learning and interpretive experiences in the zoo’s new reptile science and education facility, which is currently being designed.

IMLS received 558 applications for funding this year and Zoo Knoxville’s proposal was among 132 projects selected to receive a total of $19 million in grants.  The zoo received the maximum award of $500,000 and was one of only six zoos chosen.

“We are very proud to be chosen as the recipient of such a generous and prestigious award,” said Eddie Mannis, Chair of Zoo Knoxville’s Board of Directors.  “It allows us to continue to expand the STEM educational opportunities we can offer East Tennessee and increase the economic impact a new reptile experience can bring to Knox County.”

“We are recognized internationally for our successful work with critically endangered reptiles.  This grant will make it possible for us to bring the amazing stories these animals have to tell to the forefront in our new science and education center,” stated Lisa New, Zoo Knoxville President and CEO.
