Upgrades will be made to the City’s Solid Waste Management Facility, 1033 Elm St., beginning Tuesday, Jan. 16. Construction is scheduled to be completed by Feb. 2.

Ventilation will be improved at Building 5 at the facility, which processes more than 26,000 tons of waste from small businesses and residents annually. In addition, walls will be reinforced near an area where large items of waste are unloaded.

These upgrades are part of a $130,000 capital improvement project that also included the installation of a new canopy over a large gas tank on site. That phase of the project has already been completed. 

The construction likely will cause slight delays for residents dropping off larger waste items. The upgrades were scheduled to be done now because January is generally a slower time of year for waste drop-off.

The Solid Waste Management Facility accepts a variety of solid waste materials, including tires, building materials, construction/demolition debris, and most other materials not permitted in daily garbage collections. For more information, visit www.knoxvilletn.gov/solidwaste.
