City officials will hold a ceremony Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2019 at 2 p.m. at World’s Fair Park to officially name the Performance Lawn in honor of former Mayor Randy Tyree.
Mayor Madeline Rogero will unveil a new, four-sided, internally illuminated sign placed at the lawn’s newly redesigned entrance and a bronze plaque honoring Mayor Tyree and his history with the City of Knoxville.
The new sign mimics the design of the 14-foot gateway markers posted at the entrance of the park at Clinch Avenue and 11th Street.
Tyree was elected Knoxville Mayor in 1975 and served two terms through 1983. He led the City in planning for the 1982 World’s Fair and welcomed more than 11 million visitors.
In September 2019, City Council approved a resolution to rename the part of the park bounded by Cumberland Avenue and 11th Street.
