City employees ready for the holidays200,000 TWINKLING LIGHTS: CITY EMPLOYEES
BRING THE HOLIDAY SPARKLE

There are no Grinches to be found amongst City employees. With the cancellation of several large holiday events due to pandemic safeguards, City staff was even more determined to make the 2020 version of Christmas in the City bigger and brighter.

“Our celebration is a little different this year,” says Special Events Director Judith Foltz. “Big crowds are out. But not much is diminished. In fact, the businesses and neighborhood folks are getting creative and making new traditions. I’m proud of how the City has adapted and innovated while prioritizing public safety.”

Says Foltz: “I’m thankful to an awful lot of hard-working and conscientious City employees. I think we all wanted to pull together and see what we could do to close out an unprecedented and challenging year on a cheerful and hopeful high note.”

The Knoxville Police Department would like to welcome back Officer Fred Kimber. A 23-year veteran of the KPD, Officer Kimber returned in late September after completing a one-year military deployment in Texas as a member of the U.S. Army Reserve.

Upon his return, Officer Kimber, who is assigned to the Personnel Unit as a recruitment officer, was thrust into the KPD’s month-long recruitment campaign in October. In that capacity, Officer Kimber followed up with potential applicants who submitted contact forms through the KPD’s new recruiting website, www.joinknoxpd.com. Who Can It Be Now
Who Can It Be Now?The purpose of the “Who Can It Be Now” feature of City Matters goes beyond putting that Men at Work song in your head.

City employees are unique individuals with rich, complex lives, histories and stories to tell. In addition to serving the people of Knoxville and our co-workers, we have hobbies, passions, diversions and projects we pursue outside work hours.

Seeing the individual behind the badge, job title or steel-toed boots enriches our connection to each other and strengthens our commitment to make decisions that respect and benefit others, regardless of our differences.

Let's meet our debut “Who”:

• She has worked for the City of Knoxville for seven years and lived in East Tennessee for 38 years.
• She was born on her grandfather’s birthday.
• She lived in Panama for four years.
• She started running 5K races when she turned 50 years old.
