 CITY PRESERVES LOCAL HISTORY
AS SAFETY COMPLEX TAKES SHAPE
Since March, contractor crews have been slowly and carefully demolishing obsolete buildings on the former St. Mary’s Hospital site as the vacated campus is converted into a City Public Safety Complex.
That has sometimes involved high-reach excavators and high-tech robotic arms, which knock down a few bricks at a time.
The slow-motion takedowns were intentional. The contractor team wanted to safeguard the unique, historic and marble-accented 1929 Building, as well as the nearby buildings that are being repurposed to house Police, Fire administrative, City Court, E-911 and Pension System operations.
Razing the obsolete and non-descript buildings was akin to peeling back layers of an onion. Now, the previously covered-up 1929 Building is unobscured and free-standing for the first time in half a century. It will proudly anchor eventual private redevelopment on the north end of the site.
This is just one of many examples of how the City preserves history in its redevelopment partnerships and community reinvestments.

 This month’s mystery colleague is new on the scene, having started his job at the City in January of this year. He has lived in East Tennessee for 12 years. Not many people know that he’s a drummer, but he makes no secret of his love of robust and spicy foods—Indian, Ethiopian, Vietnamese, Filipino, Italian and his native Mexican cuisine. He loves to cook, however he’s yet to make his own corn tortillas. ? Por que no? Ask him next time you see him!
