 Parks and Rec’s KORE: Have Games, Will Travel
Who’s up for some Gaga Ball? Or Art in the Park?
The City Parks and Recreation Department's KORE (Knoxville Outdoor Recreation Experience) Program was started years ago to promote a variety of outdoor sports and activities for all age and fitness levels at parks across the city.
But the fun got kicked up a few notches this spring with the KORE 50/100 Challenge and a series of KORE with Mayor K events.
"With the KORE Challenge, there's a big emphasis on getting people into a variety of parks,” says Recreation Specialist Megan Gerlach. "I love the concept."
Parks and Rec Director Sheryl Ely says the 2.0 version of KORE “helps people get outdoors and have fun, all while working on their physical, emotional, spiritual and mental health."
You can choose one of the fast-paced games that Gerlach manages. Or you can passively have a picnic – or just lay on the grass in the sun.
The only thing that matters, Ely says, is to enjoy your time outside. Because what’s better than springtime in Knoxville?

Service Spotlight: Kathy Mack Empowers Youth
 Kathy Mack has a heart for serving young people. As Community Engagement Manager in the Office of Community Empowerment, she also has a vision for how Knoxville's young people can achieve success.
One part of that vision recently became a reality: the City's first-ever Youth Council has been established with 17 members from several area schools. The Youth Council will provide feedback to City officials on issues important to young people in Knoxville and how different policies affect them.

KFD Service Spotlight: David Jenkins
 David Jenkins marks 27 years with the Knoxville Fire Department this year, and he's spent that time becoming a fixture of the community and a valued ambassador for the KFD.
But do you know David Jenkins' nickname? If you do, you're one of the many friends he's made at KFD and in neighborhoods across the city during his career.

 April’s mystery employee has been with the City of Knoxville for six years and moved to East Tennessee six years before that.
He has worked with ranchers in Montana and branded cattle.
He has also built personal computers as a hobby since he was a teen.
He bakes all the bread products for his household, and carbonara is his favorite food.
