The Technical Services Unit is one of the most vital units to the day-to-day operations of the Knoxville Police Department.
Staffed by Police Technology Manager Julia Small and Audio/Video Technicians Eric Miller and Greg Whitaker, the Tech Services Unit is responsible for the management and upkeep of all portable and mobile two-way radios, in-car camera systems and body-worn cameras. Additionally, the Unit also processes all video requests that the department receives.
In addition to their multitude of duties, in late 2020, the Tech Services Unit undertook one of the most daunting and high-profile projects the history of the KPD: overseeing the department’s first-ever deployment of body-worn cameras as well as a complete overhaul of the in-car camera system. Over the course of that months-long project, the Unit issued 297 body-worn cameras and administered the installation of 333 in-car camera systems. In addition, the Unit provided the necessary training for officers utilizing that new and improved technology.
While devoting countless hours towards the successful completion of that project, the Tech Services Unit continued to handle its other various responsibilities with efficiency, enthusiasm and professionalism. The Knoxville Police Department is incredibly fortunate to have Julia, Eric and Greg. Their cumulative, daily efforts, expertise and team-first approach makes the department a better place.
