The City of Knoxville has scheduled a Computer Recycling Day on Saturday, June 12 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Staples, 8913 Town and Country Drive, off North Peters Road. "With technology constantly changing, many computer users have older, discarded systems," said Mayor Bill Haslam. "All computers and cell phones contain hazardous materials, and Computer Recycling Day provides an opportunity for Knoxville and Knox County residents to properly dispose of their old computer systems. "During last January's event, participants diverted more than 31 tons of computer parts from the landfills," Mayor Haslam said. Residents who bring in CPUs (towers), monitors and laptops will be registered to win a new computer donated by Staples. The used computers will be refurbished and recycled by 5R Processors (formally The Oak Ridge National Recycle Center). CD ROMS, keyboards and computer manuals will also be accepted. In addition, residents can donate their used cell phones to the Knoxville Recycling Coalition, and Cingular Wireless will give free activation with the purchase of a new phone at Staples during the day of the event. Those turning in a cell phone to be recycled will be eligible to win a new phone from Cingular (available to new customers with a 1 or 2 year service agreement). The collection event is funded, in part, by a $10,000 grant from Dell Inc. The city of Knoxville's Solid Waste office was among 12 grant winners selected from 200 applicants that included state and local governments, higher education institutions and non-profit organizations. Other sponsors of the event are FedEx Ground, Staples, 100.3 The River, Event Rentals, Rock-Tenn Recycling, SP Recycling and WBIR-TV, Channel 10.Only computers from Knox County households will be accepted at the event. Small and medium size businesses (operating with 100 computers or less) may take their computer systems to the Solid Waste Management Facility Transfer Station, at 1033 Elm St. Businesses are charged a $7 per monitor and $3 per PC and any peripherals. Large businesses (with 100 or more computers) who want to recycle their old systems can contact the 5R Processing Center for proper disposal at (865) 241-3525.
