Mayor Bill Haslam is asking for the community's input in renaming the former Eastside YMCA, which will reopen this autumn as the city's newest recreation center.
"I welcome suggestions about who we should honor in naming this wonderful community facility," said Mayor Haslam. "I believe the center should be named after someone who has made a major contribution to the youth of the city of Knoxville."
Nomination forms are available on the city's web site and at City of Knoxville recreation centers.
The new East Knoxville Recreation Center, located at Wilson Avenue and Castel Street, houses a gymnasium, indoor pool, fitness room, meeting rooms and kitchen.
The 20,000-square-foot facility is undergoing a significant refurbishment that includes new paint, replacing the roof, upgrading the heath and air conditioning system, repairing mechanical pool equipment and adding a new wood gymnasium floor and basketball goals.
Work is expected to be complete by November.
