Mayor Bill Haslam announced today the campaign to restore the Bijou Theatre has received a donation of $3,000 - the proceeds of a benefit concert by Scott Miller and the Commonwealth.

Knoxville singer/songwriter Miller presented a check to the Mayor and described the 188-year-old landmark as a performing arts venue that's deserving of widespread community support.

The donation brings the total amount raised for the Bijou to $1.4 million in commitments and pledges, including a $571,000 federal grant secured by U.S. Rep. John J. Duncan Jr.

The fundraising goal is $2.1 million, with the funds to be used to address structural deterioration, mechanical systems and accessibility issues; eliminate or reduce past liabilities; and create a two-year operating reserve for the theater.

Those wishing to donate should make their checks payable to the Bijou Theatre, and mail to Historic Tennessee Theatre Foundation, 604 S. Gay St., Knoxville, Tenn. 37902.

"The Bijou Theatre is important to Knoxville's identity as the cultural heart of our region," Mayor Haslam said. "We have in place a strategy to stabilize the property and manage the theater going forward. Now, we need the public's support to make it happen."

The board of directors of the Historic Tennessee Theatre Foundation board of directors has agreed to provide oversight for the Bijou, and AC Entertainment will book performances.

An analysis of the theatre's condition concluded that $2.1 million is needed to address structural deterioration, mechanical systems and accessibility issues; eliminate or reduce past liabilities; and create a two-year operating reserve.
