City of Knoxville and Knox County residents who recycle their aluminum cans helped the city win cash a prize of $5,000.00 that funded recycling projects throughout the rest of the year.
The City Recycling Challenge is a national contest that rewards cities for recycling aluminum beverage cans. This year the contest will take place September 1 - 15, 2005
"Considering that the average American drinks 370 beverages in aluminum cans each year, promoting aluminum recycling makes environmental sense," said Mayor Bill Haslam. "It also makes sense because nothing recycles quicker. It only takes 60 days to turn the empty cans in your recycling bin into new cans on retailers' shelves."
To help encourage and promote recycling, The U.S. Conference of Mayors has partnered with the Alcan Corporation to create the Cans for Cash - City Recycling Challenge.
City of Knoxville and Knox County Residents are encouraged to recycle their Aluminum Cans all year but especially during the first two weeks of September. The City could win cash prizes that will go to fund other recycling projects during the year. Residents can take their cans to any of the City of Knoxville recycling drop-off centers, Knox County conveyance centers or any of the private recycling companies listed below.
