At a public meeting last night, the City of Knoxville announced that the new Knoxville Transit Center would be a certified green building.
The transit center design team is attempting to achieve Silver certification for the project through the US Green Building Council’s LEED for New Construction program by designing for excellence in five categories of construction:
Sustainable Sites
Water Efficiency
Energy & Atmosphere
Materials & Resources
Indoor Environmental Quality
Additional air quality mitigation measures are to be designed into KAT’s operational plan for the new Transit Center. A GPS-based Automatic Vehicle Locator system will reduce the idle-time of buses, and the buses themselves will be equipped with state-of-the-art pollution control equipment.
