The Knoxville Civil War Roundtable will present its annual Living History Weekend at Fort Dickerson Park November 7-9, 2008 to celebrate veterans, past and present and commemorate the 145th Anniversary of the Siege of Knoxville.
The park is located just off Chapman Highway in South Knoxville at 3000 Fort Dickerson Road.
This free event is hosted by the Civil War Round Table and sponsored by the City of Knoxville's Parks and Recreation Department.
"The Civil War Roundtables reenactments at Fort Dickerson are a great way to learn a piece of Knoxville's history," said Joe Walsh, Director of City Parks and Recreation. "We are happy to support this event and applaud the Civil War Roundtable for their efforts and care of Fort Dickerson Park."
It will run from 10 a.m.- 4:30 p.m. Saturday, November 8, and from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, November 9 and will include living history campsites, infantry drilling and firing, a Civil War medical and surgical exhibit, battle reenactments, cannon firings, and other activities. Free shuttle from parking area.
Fort Dickerson was one of sixteen earthen forts and battery positions surrounding Knoxville that were built by the United States Army during the Civil War.
It was one of three constructed upon the heights across the Holston (now Tennessee) River from Knoxville with the others being Fort Stanley and Fort Higley.
The middle fort was named for Captain Jonathan C. Dickerson, 112th Illinois Mounted Infantry, who was killed in action near Cleveland Tennessee.
Friday, November 7 is School Day and area grade schools have been invited to attend a fun-filled and educational experience, including medical and surgical demonstrations, artillery, infantry and cavalry demonstrations, and fascinating insights from local scholars and historians on the importance of Fort Dickerson and Knoxville during the Civil War.
