The Knoxville Museum of Art's Alive After Five concert series presents the acoustic swing of the Tennessee Sheiks on Friday, January 23, from 5:30-8:00 pm.
The Tennessee Sheiks is a band composed of seasoned musicians from the Knoxville area with many years of experience playing with other groups in a variety of musical genres: bluegrass, jazz, blues, and swing. They have been performing together as the Sheiks for over four years. Drawing inspiration from the great Gypsy jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt, they play classic Swing Era tunes as well as some original material and the occasional Appalachian murder ballad just for fun.
Jazz and folk singer Nancy Brennan Strange is the vocalist in the group. Don Cassel is one of East Tennessee's finest mandolin and dobro players. Don Wood is a virtuoso guitarist in the Reinhardt style. Rounding out the group are Jon Steele on bass and Morgan Simmons on rhythm guitar, tenor banjo, and percussion.
Admission to this performance of Alive After Five is $8 for non-members, and $4 for museum members and students. Alive After Five is sponsored by Cherokee Distributing Company, Knoxville News Sentinel, WVLT-TV8 and WDVX-89.9FM.
