Knoxville Mayor Bill Haslam and Police Chief Sterling Owen named Officers Tolliver Robertson, Keith Lyon, Amanda Bunch, Stephanie Wilson and Ryan Kuykendall the February Officers of the Month for the Knoxville Police Department.
Chief Owen said that on February 12, 2010, at approximately 12:49 p.m., these were the first officers to arrive on the scene of a double shooting inside Inskip Elementary School. Officer Robertson began giving tactical directions to the arriving officers. Officer Robertson then led the group through the front doors of the school securing the entranceway while attempting to ascertain the location of the victims as well as the suspect. Officer Lyon secured the office area where the two victims as well as several additional school employees were located. Officer Robertson and Officer Wilson secured the main hallway to the left of the office while Officer Bunch and Officer Kuykendall secured the hallway to the right of the office.
Chief Owen said, "After clearing the immediate area of any threats, these officers held their positions to provide cover for the victims and emergency personnel entering the building. Their quick response, leadership, and courage in this high stress situation enabled Knoxville Fire Department First Responders to reach the victims to begin first aid in just minutes from the time the call was dispatched."
"These officers relied on their training as well as their own personal courage to go into harm's way in an unknown environment in order to get help to the victims," said Chief Owen.
Mayor Haslam said, "We commend these officers for their outstanding performance during a very stressful situation. It was a job well done."
