The City of Knoxville Parks and Recreation Department has released its third edition of the Knoxville Greenways map. Since the last publication of the map, ten miles of greenway have been added, totaling the City at 50 miles of greenway.
"Greenways have really come a long way in Knoxville, and I think people are recognizing their value," said Joe Walsh, Director of Knoxville Parks and Recreation. "When we hold public meetings, greenways are the most requested recreation amenity. Now, we're finding that the greenways map is the most requested printed material we have to offer."
New features added to the greenway map include the mile markers that the Knoxville Track Club installed on various greenways throughout the City as well as new bus stops that coincide with greenway trailheads.
Additionally, on the back of the new map, planning maps are included that display potential greenways - one along First Creek connecting Tommy Schumpert Park to Downtown Knoxville and one connecting parks and Civil War sites along the Urban Wilderness Corridor in South Knoxville.
"We're hoping that these planning maps will help residents to see how easily they could have a greenway that connects their neighborhood to many of Knoxville's destinations like parks, libraries, restaurants and grocery stores, to name a few," said Walsh.
Citizens may obtain a new greenway map for free by calling 311 or by visiting a recreation center or library located within City limits.
