The City of Knoxville and Knox County's Parks and Recreation Departments are offering a new program beginning this weekend that combines walking with an opportunity to learn more about wildflowers.
The "Tour de Fleur," a monthly wildflower walking series is set to begin at 11 a.m., Saturday, April 16 at Ijams Nature Center, located at 2915 Island Home Avenue. The series will continue through the first weekend in September.
Led by Lynn Bales, Ijams Nature Center Naturalist, the first walk will meander along Will Skelton Greenway from Ijams Nature Center and venture out onto the breathtaking boardwalk that hangs out over the Tennessee River for a good view of the wildflowers growing along the Bluff.
All Tour de Fleur walks will be on Saturdays and led by a nature guide. Walks will either be on Will Skelton Greenway or the Ten Mile Creek Greenway, developed by both the city and county, in West Knoxville.
The Ten Mile Creek Greenway walks will feature a variety of wildflowers and trees along the 1.7 mile trial that is highlighted by seasonal changes in colors and textures along the path and creek bed.
Another anticipated walk in the series will be the July event featuring the sunflower fields in Ijams.
