The City of Knoxville will host a Cart Roll Out event at 10:30 a.m., Friday, September 9, on the 1000 block of Luttrell Street in the Fourth & Gill Neighborhood to celebrate the City's new household recycling program.

Recycling carts will be delivered to those who signed-up for the new curbside service in neighborhoods across the City from August 29 - September 16. The delivery of carts to those who signed-up by August 14, marks the last major step before the City begins the much-anticipated single-stream household recycling program the first of October.

To date, approximately 17,000 households in Knoxville have signed p for the new recycling program leaving an additional 3,000 available slots. Sign-ups continue online at www.doyourpartwiththecart.com or by calling 311.

"We are excited to be able to start getting these containers to residents," Mayor Daniel Brown said. "Developing this program has been a long process and a lot of people have worked very hard to make curbside recycling a reality in Knoxville. We've not reached our goal yet, but we're closing in on starting this program and we are very pleased about that."

This single-stream curbside recycling model makes recycling very easy. Residents do not have to separate by type of recyclable material or take to a recycling drop center. A cart is supplied by the City, and residents merely need to roll the cart to the curb every other week for pick up starting the first of October.

This model has been proven effective across the country at reducing the amount of material going to the landfill.
